WHO IS GOD

Who Is God?
A Devotional for Young Hearts (Ages 7-14)
Opening Thought
If someone asked you to describe your best friend, you could probably talk for hours about what makes them special—their personality, what they love, how they treat you, and why you enjoy being around them. But what if someone asked you, "Who is God?" Would you know what to say? Getting to know God is the greatest adventure you'll ever go on!
God's Word Says...
"The Lord your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing."
Zephaniah 3:17 (NIV)
"God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them."
1 John 4:16 (NIV)
"Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the whole world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God."
Psalm 90:2 (NIV)
"And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."
Matthew 28:20 (NIV)
Getting to Know God
God Is Love (But Not Just Any Love)
You know how your family loves you? God's love is like that, but imagine it's a million times stronger and will never, ever run out. Even when your parents have bad days or get frustrated, God never has a bad day. His love for you is perfect, constant, and never changes based on your behavior. He loves you when you're happy, sad, angry, or confused. He loves you on your best days and your worst days.
God Is Powerful (Like a Superhero, But Real)
Think about the most powerful superhero you know. God has more power than all of them combined! He created the entire universe—every star, planet, animal, and person—just by speaking. But here's the amazing part: He uses all that incredible power to take care of you. When you're scared, He's your protector. When you face big problems, nothing is too hard for Him to handle.
God Is Always Present (Better Than the Best Friend)
Have you ever wished you could text God or have Him sit next to you when you're worried? Here's the incredible truth: God is actually closer to you than your closest friend. He's with you in your bedroom, at school, on the playground, and even in the bathroom (yes, really!). You're never alone, even when it feels like it.
God Is Good (Trustworthy in Every Way)
Sometimes adults let you down or make promises they can't keep. God never does. When He says something, you can count on it 100%. He always wants what's best for you, even when you can't understand why certain things happen. His plans for you are good, even when life gets confusing or hard.
God Knows Everything About You (And Still Loves You!)
God knows your favorite color, what makes you laugh, what scares you, and even what you're thinking right now as you read this. He knows about the secret worry you haven't told anyone and the dream you have for your future. And knowing all of that—even the parts you're not proud of—He still thinks you're amazing.
Real Talk for Real Kids
When God feels far away: Sometimes you might not "feel" God, especially during boring times or when you're upset. But feelings aren't always facts. God promises He's always with you, whether you feel it or not. It's like the sun—sometimes clouds hide it, but it's still there.
When you wonder if God really cares: Look around at the world He made. He created puppies, pizza, rainbows, and laughter. He gave you people who love you and talents that make you special. These aren't accidents—they're gifts that show how much He cares about making you happy.
When other people describe God differently: You might hear people describe God in ways that sound scary or mean. But Jesus came to show us exactly what God is like—loving, kind, patient, and good. If someone's description of God doesn't match Jesus, it's probably not accurate.
What This Means for Your Daily Life
When you're worried about a test: Remember God is with you and cares about what matters to you
When someone is mean to you: Know that God sees everything and He's your defender
When you mess up: Remember God's love doesn't change based on your mistakes
When you feel lonely: Talk to God like you would talk to your best friend—because that's what He is
When you're excited about something: Share it with God! He delights in your joy
Questions to Think About
1. Which quality of God (His love, power, presence, goodness, or knowledge) do you need to remember most right now?
2. How does knowing God is always with you change how you feel about facing challenges?
3. What's one way you can talk to God today, just like talking to a best friend?
4. If you had to describe God to a friend who's never heard about Him, what would you say?
Prayer
Dear God, thank You for being exactly who You are—loving, powerful, present, good, and all-knowing. Help me to get to know You better each day, not just by learning about You, but by talking to You and noticing how You're working in my life. When I'm confused about who You are, help me remember Jesus and how He showed Your love. Thank You for being the best friend I could ever have. In Jesus' name, Amen.
This Week's Challenge
Each day this week, try to notice one way God shows up in your life. It might be through a friend's kindness, a beautiful sunset, a family hug, or even just feeling peaceful when you pray. At the end of each day, thank God for that one thing you noticed.
Keep a simple list:
Monday: I noticed God when...
Tuesday: I noticed God when...
(And so on!)
Remember This
God isn't a distant, scary figure in the sky. He's your loving Father who created you, knows you completely, and wants to be part of every moment of your life. You don't have to be perfect or use fancy words to talk to Him. Just be yourself—that's exactly who He wants to spend time with. The Creator of the universe thinks you're worth His time and attention. How amazing is that?
